-controlled house. for more on this we turn to cnbc's chief washington correspondent john harwood. john, how does all this play out? >> well, lester, look, they are going to fight. and they may not be able to reconcile these two documents. the house budget would balance after ten years. repeal obama care. no tax increases. the senate budget doesn't get to balance after ten years, it includes $1 trillion of tax increases, even some stimulus money to try to get the economy going. but it's significant that they're fighting at a lower level of intensity and turmoil. notice that the congress left for easter break without a crisis over a government shutdown. there was no crisis over potential debt limit, and government default earlier this year. could come back this summer but so long as it lasts, that's calming for the markets and good for the economy, and it may, lester, leave some space still for a compromise in which democrats would agree to changes in cuts in medicare and social security, and republicans would come up with a little bit more tax revenue, lester. >> all right, john harwood tonight,
there waiting to be paid out to people who may not realize they have it coming. nbc's john yang has more on why and how you can tell if you're among them. >> reporter: andy and chris fox got a letter about a year ago that shocked them. >> it was five years after my father had passed. we had no knowledge of any insurance policies whatsoever. >> reporter: the letter was from an insurance company. they would learn that chris' father had three separate life insurance policies worth nearly $50,000 and never told his family. to recover their money, the foxes embarked on what would become a journey. there were weeks of phone calls with insurance companies and state insurance officials. >> i worked for uncle sam, the united states navy, as a civilian for 38 years. i know what it is to deal with a bureaucracy. >> reporter: in the end they collected $48,000. it took them eight months. the foxes' experience is not unique. according to a recent study there's a one in 600 chance you're owed money from a life insurance policy and don't even know it. that's better odds than winning $100 on a powerball ticket.

. savannah? >> we are following breaking news in afghanistan. secretary of state john kerry is making an unannounced city of kabul after visiting iraq on sunday. andrea mitchell is traveling with the secretary. andrea, good morning to you. >> reporter: good morning, savannah. secretary kerry just arrived and, as you know, it was a difficult relationship with afghan's president karzai. officials on the plane say that kerry knows him well, has seen him five times -- has been to afghanistan five times as a senator and believes they can get past the difficulty, the friction of when karzai told the secretary of defense that he believes that america is conspiring with the taliban. they believe they can get past that. they know it will not be a smooth transition but they are here to work on all of those issues, the political and security issues. they are aware and supportive of karzai's statement that he is going to start working on talks eventually with the taliban and eventually the state department officials say will be direct talks with the taliban as long as they have laid down their ar
